The trip from Puerto Vallarta to Monterrey, Mexico a city of 1.2 million is an easy getaway once you learn the ins and outs of traveling cheap within Mexico. The flight to Monterrey on Vivaaerobus departed the PV International Airport around 5:30 P.M.
Vivaaerobus, an airline similar to Southwest in the US, flies between Puerto Vallarta and the city of Monterrey almost daily. The fares vary depending on when you book your flight but can range between $45 to $107 one way.
Monterrey is considered to be one of the most developed cities in Mexico. I can tell you right now, once your flight lands and you take a bus to the downtown area, you’ll need to remind yourself more than once you’re in Mexico. You will see sprawling American corporate buildings, including Mary Kay, General Electric, Whirlpool and more, as the luxury bus navigates the modern freeway system. Depending on what time you arrive in Monterrey, you’ll experience bumper to bumper traffic as if you were in Los Angeles.
For $75 pesos you can catch the Viva bus from the airport to the bus depot downtown. It’s much cheaper than taking a cab. (27 miles) The bus station in Monterrey Centro is a major transportation hub.
Most of the locals travel by bus. The buses are luxurious with WI-Fi and movie screens for passengers. Widebody reclining seats and state of the art lavatories. (You can select less expensive buses)
From the Monterrey bus depot, you can travel into the United States or other parts of Mexico or take a cab to your hotel in Monterrey.
If you’re American you’ll feel right at home until they speak to you in Spanish and expect you to respond accordingly.
This trip is what we expats call “back-dooring” the United States. Monterrey, Mexico is approximately 143 miles from Nuevo Laredo, which is just across the fence, or river from Laredo, Texas USA.
A $20 bus ride (3 hours) from Monterrey puts you into Texas. You can return to Monterrey the same night or spend time in Laredo. You can also opt to take a bus to Nuevo Laredo and walk across the border, or you can take the bus right into Laredo, Texas and go through U.S. costumes via the bus company. I believe this way is longer because you must wait until everyone on the bus clears customs, however, it’s easier, especially if you’re carrying luggage and it’s safer if you’re concerned about past events in Laredo.
Monterrey is a beautiful city, but like any city, it has poor sections of town and the newer, well-maintained, sections of the city. The city is full of history and culture. You can find top of the line shopping at major stores like Sears which is in downtown Monterrey. The video below presents a more concise all-around view of the city. There are hotels to fit almost any budget in downtown Monterrey. Most hotels on the major travel websites are safe, clean and affordable.
